Domain Harvesting

Domain Harvesting is Appilot's mechanism for automatically tracking which domains and pages users interact with — even before those domains are formally registered in the system.

How it works

  1. Users browse the web with the Appilot extension installed
  2. The extension reports page visits (URL, title) as activity events
  3. The backend tracks domains that aren't yet registered in any organization
  4. These "harvested" domains appear in the Backoffice as candidates for registration

Why it matters

Without domain harvesting, organizations would need to manually identify and register every domain upfront. With harvesting:

  • Discover what your users actually use — See which web apps employees interact with most
  • Prioritize knowledge creation — Focus on high-traffic domains first
  • Zero configuration to start — Users just install the extension and use it normally

Data collected

Domain harvesting captures:

DataDescription
Domaine.g., app.example.com
Path patternse.g., /dashboard, /settings
Visit frequencyHow often users visit
First/last seenWhen the domain was first and last visited

It does not capture:

  • Form data or field values
  • User personal information
  • Page content or screenshots

From harvested to registered

Once a domain appears in the harvested list:

  1. Admin reviews it in the Backoffice
  2. Admin registers it as a formal domain
  3. Knowledge team begins creating content for that domain
  4. Users on that domain start getting contextual answers
